convenience
Hi? I guess we can consider this my first “official” post. This is one of my old drabbles from a few years ago. I don’t really know what else I can classify it as.
Enjoy?

He watched her move from the corner of his eye, her actions completely unaware of his penetrating gaze. He loved watching her at her unguarded moments. Now was one of them. Her eyes followed the movements of her fingers as they skimmed the page of her large textbook. He loved watching her study. She, unlike many others, was at most peace with the activity. In fact, she was so engrossed with it that she hadn’t noticed him slip into the chair across her. He crossed his forearms flat on the table and rested his temple on his arms, his eyes looking up dramatically at her.
“Are you done yet?” he would ask, but he never had the patience to wait for an answer, “let’s go out for a while, I’m bored.”
“You’re old enough.” or “You know the way around, what do you need me for?” was the answer he would usually get, and what he was quite expecting at the moment. Until she did speak.
“Where to?” she replied, the text in front of her momentarily forgotten.
He lifted his eyes even more dramatically to look at her, “You’re actually saying yes?” he asked.
She put down her pencil and rested her chin on the heel of her palm, her face angled so she was looking down at him. “I figured someone with less of a social life than I would need the company. Of course you could go make up with your friends quick.”
He straightened on his seat, shaking his head for effect, “I’d rather not. Not until they apologize to you first.”
She giggled rather uncharacteristically, “How sweet, let’s go. I’ll treat you out to ice cream.”
A large grin spread across his face as they stood from the dining table. She handed him his coat, and he opened the door for her. After he locked the front door, the two of them walked the already empty road to the nearest 24-hour convenience store. It was a silent tread, but he was thankful for her company alone. He snuck a glance at her, and when she looked at him he immediately froze. Her brow raised in question, and he shook his head.
“Do you have something to say to me? You’ve been sneaking glances at me all day.” she said.
He gulped, she did notice after all.
“If I didn’t know any better,” she continued, “I’d think you liked me or something.”
He laughed nervously, “Why in the world would you think that? Oh look! We’re here!” he exclaimed, spotting the store. He jogged to the entrance and opened the door for her, sighing in relief at the distraction the moment she passed him by the door. That was a very close call.
